What to Expect from Your Baby’s Photo Session – [ENG]

When you book your Baby Milestones photography experience in Calgary, we always send a timeline with suggested dates so we can have everything organized to photograph your little one’s key developmental milestones throughout the year.

We will prioritize photographing during the week when the baby turns another month.

___________

How does the session work?

Our family sessions in Calgary are light and spontaneous. We genuinely aim to capture the details of everyday life, which are so precious — it’s in the little things where happiness lies. We’ll document and celebrate each small achievement in the baby’s development, and also capture sweet, cherished moments of family life.

___________

Natural light

As a baby’s eyes are very sensitive to light, we do not use flash. Therefore, the sessions should take place during the day to make the most of natural light. In the winter, we always start sessions between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

___________

Unforeseen things happen

If the baby is under the weather and the parents feel the session won’t be enjoyable or comfortable for the child, we can absolutely reschedule. To ensure we still capture that month’s milestone, it’s best to postpone within the same month.

___________

Where will we shoot?

Lifestyle photography, as the name suggests, captures the everyday setting where the baby will grow. We usually spend more time in the baby’s room, the parents’ bed, and as the baby grows, we explore other rooms of the home, eventually capturing fun in the backyard and on outings with your little one.

___________

How long does the session take?

The average session time is around one hour. But of course, we’re talking about photographing babies, and in the first few months, they are anything but predictable: regular feedings, reflux, diaper changes, and crying can make the session less straightforward. In the early months, we must follow the baby’s rhythm, which tends to make the session longer. We’ll use whatever time the baby allows us.

___________

How should we dress the babies?

Especially for newborns, the key piece for the session is a plain white onesie. Not necessarily white, but solid, pastel, and without patterns. This is because babies are so tiny, and any pattern or accessory can overshadow the baby’s features.

You can bring up to 2 special outfits for the session. Clothes that were gifts or even pieces that the parents used when they were babies are very nice ideas. We start taking the timeless and calm photos with the baby wearing something more neutral, and after that we try the other looks. 🙂

___________

What should the parents wear?

Especially for a newborn session, it’s valuable to capture photos of the family with the new arrival at home. But the focus is always on the baby.

For this reason, it’s preferable for parents to wear basic clothes, preferably white or in pastel tones, without bold patterns that could overshadow the little one’s presence, who is so tiny at this stage.

For moms, try to wear a top that facilitates breastfeeding during the session.

___________

Who can attend the session?

We love capturing grandparents and family members who come from Brazil to be part of the baby’s first moments of life. They are more than welcome! Pets can join too!

However, too many people in the house can stress the baby, which might affect the session’s flow. We recommend having up to one extra couple in the home (e.g., Grandma and Grandpa).

But as expats ourselves, we know how important it is to host family here. So if the house happens to be full of special people, we won’t make it a problem. Let’s capture this joy!

___________

It’s going to be beautiful!

As the cellist and conductor Pablo Casals said:

“Each second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe, a moment that will never be again.”

If there’s one thing we should never regret, it’s photographing the moments of the family you are building. It’s YOUR STORY, and consequently, a priceless legacy you will leave for your children.

We always invite the family to feel the full value of your everyday life, the joy and fulfillment of everything you are experiencing in that moment, even with sleep deprivation or any difficulties and anxieties that, yes, exist along the way. But while you live the experience of the photo session, “allow yourself to feel!” Feel that everything you are creating is beautiful and unique ♥️!
